Over the course of 3 days, 6000+ people visited the spectacular backdrop of the Sun N Fun grounds in Lakeland, Florida to attend the 2016 Central Florida Throwdown. Two 20,000 square foot airplane hangars were converted into a gym floor, tailgating area, and vendor space.
Friday night kicked off with early athlete check in and the Floater WOD where competitors got the opportunity to find their 1 rep max on bench press then push themselves to complete as many single-unders as time allowed. The DJ kept us entertained and we got the chance to see a beautiful rainbow over the airport runway while Florida gave us one of its standard late afternoon showers.
Saturday morning started bright and early with opening ceremonies and the singing of our National Anthem. Athletes then completed WOD 1 and WOD 2 (and the Floater WOD if not completed on Friday). WOD 1 was a triple chipper consisting of bar facing burpees, front squats, SDHP, box jumps, overhead squats, pull-ups, box jump overs, thrusters, and chest to bars. WOD 2 was a 1,000 meter row and 50 wall balls.
Athletes were able to shop during their downtime at some great vendor booths, eat some delicious Paleo food, and cheer on their friends until late afternoon.
Athletes returned Sunday to complete WOD 3. Deadlifts, double-unders and muscle ups! Everyone waited anxiously for the release of WOD 4 which the top 10 from each division would compete in. Competitors found out around noon that they would be completing power snatches and handstand walks in what would be the final WOD of the day.
Guests and fellow athletes cheered the best of the best on during WOD 4 where we saw exceptional athletes compete in each division, some for their 4thyear in a row and some brand new to the Throwdown or Crossfit in general.
At the end of Sunday we were proud to show off the winners of the 2016 Throwdown from beginners all the way to our elite athletes.
As the winners received their title belts, our Director had a special gift to the first Throwdown winner from 2013… a custom 2013 belt! Belts weren’t awarded until 2014 and she knew that to make the chain complete he deserved to be a part of the tradition!
