Whether you are an experienced Crossfit athlete or a novice learning the ropes, a competition is a great way to test your skills and mental game.  The Central Florida Thowdown is a premier event taking place September 16-17 in Lakeland, FL ( located between Tampa and Orlando) and offers a unique playground for athletes of all ages and levels to enjoy some competition, camaraderie and Florida sunshine. In 2015, over 550 competitors and 91 affiliates were represented from 28 Florida counties and 5 States.  For 2016, the event is growing to 700 participants and over 5,000 spectators.

An often unsung as13415397_591451034361910_1601408095550476152_opect of these competitions is the community support and togetherness cultivated.

In 2015, The Central Florida Throwdown donated 30% of the  profits to 50 Legs ( http://www.50legs.org/ ), an organization which provide prosthetic devices to amputees who might not otherwise be able to afford them.  Over $25,000 has been raised since The Thowdown began in 2013.

The Central Florida Throwdown offers an opportunity to not only compete against others, but also fights much greater:

-In 2015, Masters Female winner competed in honor of her mom who was battling cancer: “I dedicate this win to my mother who continues her fight against cancers.”

-Mike Hopkins of CrossFit Junkies wrote: “Hey Anitra, can’t wait for this years Throwdown it is a special one for me this year in that in 2014 when I came to your event I had just finished cancer treatment and had just been introduced to CrossFit, I was 32 years old. I set a goal to compete in 2015 individual scaled, which I did and took 7th, and this year individual Rx. I am signed up and super excited for this year’s event and to fulfill my goal. It has been a long and sometimes grueling road but I wouldn’t trade it for anything. When I finished my treatment I had dwindled down to 162lbs but now am up to 220lbs and feeling great. Thank you so much for all of the hard work you put into this event to make it successful year after year. It is a very special event for me and I plan on participating in it for years to come. Best wishes and look forward to seeing you in September!

Butterfly pull-ups can be fun to learn and serve a great purpose for athletes. When the time comes for newbies to practice the butterfly kip, I prefer to use a technique called “Blocking Movement” for Reverse Grip Kipping Pull-ups.
